ILE ILU - EPK 2022
Bio:
ILE ILU is a women’s drumming and percussion collective based in Sydney on the Gadigal, Bidjigal, Darkinjung Lands and Waters of the Eora Nation.
Led by multi-disciplinary artist and multi-instrumentalist Marina Da Silva, they are channelling and co-creating rhythms, music and art from multicultural Australia, Brazil and beyond.
The colours Pink, Green and Gold represent the pillars of this collective which are Sisterhood (pink) Roots (green) and Magic (gold), as well as the loving interconnection between the countries of Australia and Brazil.
ILE ILU, which means House of Drums in Yoruban language, has grown on a foundation of Brazilian rhythms and music. Largely inspired by Marina’s upbringing as a first generation Australian, and her deep lifelong connection to her Brazilian roots, Marina founded ILE ILU to share her passion for music, dance, drumming and rhythm, and to create healing spaces for women to come together, learn and feel connected, joyful and empowered.
After returning from a trip to Salvador, Bahia in Brazil in 2019, where she had been studying drum and dance, Marina began teaching her dancer friends some drumming for a surprise performance at a close friends wedding, and ILE ILU was born in response to requests for the drumming and percussion collective to perform at other events around Sydney.
Now an ever evolving and blossoming group, ILE ILU has performed at prominent Sydney venues such as Red Rattler & LazyBones Lounge, festivals such as Lost Paradise, and they are in the process of recording their debut album.
